Studies media representations of Aboriginal people and Aboriginality, by particular reference to newspaper items from mid-1987 to mid-1989; examines role of media in constructing public opinion, the creation and perpetuation of stereotypes and the portrayal of race relations; the first part of the study examines established discourse and considers place of publication, public opinion polls, newspapers and news items, editorials, letters to the editor, cartoons; the second part of the study examines developing discourses at Tennant Creek (local newspapers, transcript of Warumungu land claim, bureacratic dealings, mining industry activity) where relations of power are changing , and at Goondiwindi, Toomelah and Boggabilla where a colonialist discourse remains dominant; the third section describes the process and methodology of the study and contents of the database.
